Aluminum Siding Painting
Painting aluminum siding is as much of a time eating process as any type of house siding. If you decided to do it yourself, there are three ways you can go about prepping the house for painting. The first process is the longest and most expensive proposition to prep the house. With that being said it is the best type of prep. The second is quicker and the third should take no more then a days long work.
CLEANING ALUMINUM SIDING
1)The top choice would be to sand down your aluminum siding. You can use a rounded orbital sander with 100 grit, this will do the job very well. A shop vacuum should be attached to collect all the dust. This is the best of all three choices as the sander gets right down to the bare metal. Being the best it takes the longest to accomplish this. Set aside a budget for the sanding pads, depending on the condition of the paint and grime, you might need a larger budget then expected. Time wise, this might take at least a few full working days to get it done depending on the size of your house.\
2)The second choice would be hand washing your aluminum Siding. You will need 1 cup of liquid house hold bleach, 1 cup of liquids TSP and a gallon of water. Use a light sponge with an abrasive pad. The bleach will kill the mildew while the TSP breaks down the powdery pigment on the siding. Works well, however very time consuming. Time wise the sanding and hand washing might take the same amount of time. The cost however might be just a little less.
3)Pressure washing your aluminum siding will take the least amount of time. All you have to do is hook up to your garden hose, buy 5 gallons of top grade fuel and go at it. On the average a typical house should take about a day to wash it down. When washing your siding never use the red tip since it has the potential to damage the siding due to the direct pressure. Use the other tips that fan the stream of water out, start with the white one, if that’s too slow the upgrade it to the next color. When spraying, point the wand down, this way it wont rip the aluminum siding off.
All three methods will require you to have access to goof ladders and safety equipment as you will be working off the ground most of the time. Often homeowners will forgo the paint masks, we highly advise that you invest in a good mask and use it at all times when dust is in the air.
PAINTING ALUMINIUM SIDING
